What if love were a science?
If love were a science, how would it be studied?
What instruments would we use to measure love?
What studies would take place, what standard would we measure our findings by?
How would we ever know what love truly is? Could we ever define it?

If love were a contest, how would it be judged?
Could we use a scale of 1 to 10 to measure love? Could you?
Is there such a thing as a better love or a worse love?
How would we know who the true winners were in this contest of love?

If love were a book, how would it be read?
Would we read it from front to back or back to front?
Or would we read it like we read our favorite book, jumping from passage to passage?
How could we ever be sure that we are reading it the right way?

If love were a painting, who would the artist be?
Who would we entrust with this difficult task of painting love?
Michealangelo, Da Vinci, Picasso, or would it be you?
How would we know where to begin and when we were done?

If love were a feeling, where would it start?
What would love feel like if love were simply a feeling?
Would it be goosebumps and a quickened heart, sweaty palms and shortness of breath?
How could we ever determine the exact feelings associated with love?

If love were a language, how many of us would able to speak it?
Would you be fluent in the language of love, or would you stand there unaware?
If you heard the language of love, would you recognize it or simply pass it by?
How would we teach this language to those who do not understand it?

If love were a song, would it be your favorite one?
Would the music bring you to tears or brighten your day?
Or would it simply not affect you, slipping by unnoticed and unnappreciated?
How would you compose this song of love? What lyrics would you write?

If love were a poem, how would you start it?
Roses are red and violets are blue...
Or would you write from your heart, bringing tears to the eyes of all who read it?
How could you ever finish a poem that described love?

If love had a place inside you, where would it be?
Would it live in your heart, bringing life with every beat?
Or would it live in your mind, as a thought and nothing more?
Where would it be for you? Would you even know where to look?

What if love was all this and more? What if love were a part of everything we see?
Could you recognize it in the world around you, or would you simply see the outer portion?
Would you willing to train your eyes to see love and your heart to feel it?
Or would the work simply not be worth it for the rewards? What would you do?

If love were a science, these are some of the questions I might ask.
Though I could never fathom the true definition of love, unless...
Unless I experienced it in my own life. Then I would know what love was, what love is.
The only problem is, I can't find the words to describe it to you.

So I write this poem in hopes that you might see what I see, glimpse into my heart.
For though I cannot describe love in words, I can show it in actions.
Will that be enough to show you what love means to me? I don't know.
But all I have is this poem and what I know to be true and I trust that will be enough.
