Walls might not protect
Behind the Wall

Some people hide behind a wall,
Thick, stone upon stone above one’s head.
One rock is the fear of being spurned,
Another represents the desire
To protect their fragile hearts
So the damage isn’t shattered glass.

A lovely someone stays behind
A craggy refuse, afraid to live life.
She will take a peek above the top
Before she drops out of sight again.
A toe will creep toward freedom,
Then jerk back to hide once more.

The hand reaching out to her
She doesn’t meet completely,
But withdraws to safety, she thinks.
She knows that behind the wall
She will continue to hurt, alone.
She doesn’t realize that stepping out
Means the hurt only might come.

However, she stays behind the wall
Secure in the hurt she knows
Will always keep her company.

Note: This poem is the result of something Dr. Phil said on his show the other day, “Behind the wall you know you’ll hurt, but if you step out, you only know you might.”
