Aging often brings loneliness
The elderly woman sits slowly rocking
As she stares out the window wondering
If today someone will come, or at least phone,
Or if she will remain alone once again.

She lived for others forever it seemed,
Running, doing, helping her family.
Then her life became theirs, never hers,
Until she had nothing remaining but scraps,

Hoping each day for a call, a note, a visit
That came less often as the years passed,
When she no longer was required or able
To give what, in the past, she could offer.

She sought companionship, completion, worth
Through her church, by mail, with neighbors,
But none could fill the empty, yearning void
Left by those she loved but who hadn’t time.

Therefore she sits slowly rocking
As she stares out the window wondering
If today someone will care enough or
If she will rock the rest of her life away.
