about the conflict between my christian upbringing and eastern beliefs
Tears of joy and of fear cloud
My slanted western eyes,
As beautiful words from
The East caress my heart.
Words of love and peace threaten
My immortal soul with their truth.
A golden spirit beckons
From my mirror "Come, see”.
“ No” my ego shudders,
“I can’t. I can’t believe.
I am American. I am Christian.
Jesus is the only way.”
The Buddha in my mirror smiles patiently
Inviting me to step into the eternal now.
My dying ego resists.
“ I am American. I am Christian. I am…I am…”
My fearful heart cries “Oh, God!”
From East, from West, from North, from South
From within, a still small voice
Declares, “I am here.”
