Free verse poem in dramatic monolougue. A girl talks to her mom, who is an alchoholic.
This started out as an assignment for my English class and we're entering it in this contest thing. Tell me what you think!

Even Though You Drink

I clench my fists in anger,
And try to hold back the tears.
My face flushes in embarrassment,
When you stumble down the stairs,

And I know you say you love me.
But it’s so hard to believe,
Because it feels like all you do is drink,
And never listen to me.

How can you live with yourself everyday?
One more sip of that Vodka, one more drink,
That’s what you say.

But how can I believe you?
You never tell the truth.
All I hear is lies,
And some petty excuse.
I can’t go downstairs after five,
Because that’s when you poor the wine.
So I stay locked up in my room,
Hoping you’ll forget about me,
So I don’t have to smell the booze.

But when I do go down,
I always try to be quick.
Because I know if I’m there too long,
I’ll never get away.
I’ll be stuck down there with you,
Blabbering away.

Your eyes are dark and droopy,
Your face is an awful shade of gray.
You hold your drink in one hand,
While your other reaches for me to stay.

And I try to tell you to stop,
But you just won’t listen to me.
You say it’s not that bad,
But you don’t have to deal with it like me.

You don’t bear the scars,
From when you said mean things.
You don’t cry yourself to sleep,
When you think there’s no hope left.
You don’t have to watch your fights,
And listen in despair.
You don’t have to worry,
That you’ll make it back today.

Because you left last night after your fight with Dad.
And when I look in your room,
I sigh in relief to see you there.
Although you’re probably hung over the moon.

And I know it will start all over tonight,
When you pick up your glass at five.
And I know you’ll do the same stuff again,
And I know I’ll probably cry.
But Mom I want you to know,
That you really need to think.
But you still mean the world to me,
Even though you drink.
