Poem about striving to do better

The Rest

My daddy always taught me,
try to do my very, very best.
A winner is all I'd want to be,
what's left is all the rest.

I thought that was really unfair,
to look at those less fortunate,
with superior attitude and air.
It's all so greedy and so adamant.

I tried to do what daddy said,
and sometimes I didn't agree.
Didn't believe everything I read,
and only half of what I could see.

Now it's so many, many years later,
don't know if I'm wiser for the wear.
I know daddy was a great inspirator,
his thoughts on life a little more fair.
