a poetry contest
The video plays static
She sleeps without a sound
The shadows lurk in darkness covering the ground
I know she was born for so much more than tragic

Misplaced sneakers are easily side-stepped to land on glass
She's only five, her stance on life so solitary
Her home feels like a cemetery
I am a stranger who came just to pass

No longer do I linger here
As I called this home once, too
Only Auburn Hair knows the pain I once went through
Her doe eyes have seen so much, yet innocence is clear

You're daughter takes a bite out of a stranger's lunch
Just to stay alive
If you look closer it's her soul that needs to be revived
My ire is vivid from a hole in the wall I've punched

The moon sees all our secrets
Our injustice, our emotions, our predetermined fate
Nothing I could give up would ever compensate
This pen sits in my hand writing down regret

Mother's at a party with another man
The little child's night-light, a crack from a door
Behind that lies Daddy on the bathroom floor
The only thing she has is me to hold her tiny hand
