The life of a horse is like the changing of seasons.
OLD FAITHFUL PETE

There's never been a horse
quite like Old Faithful Pete
who was kind in the heart
and swift on his feet.
His muzzle was velvet,
his ears soft as silk
and the blaze down his face
was as white as sweet milk.

His heart was like gold
the old trainers would say
and his gaits smooth as glass
and his hide warm as May.
Now Old Faithful Pete
was the best horse around
but time and the fast track
were wearing him down.

So they took him away
from the life that he knew;
the betting, the jockeys,
and his own stable crew.
He was put up for stud,
many a son he did sire
until it was time for
the old boy to retire.

Now Faithful's famed life's
like the passing of time.
It begins with his youth
and moves on past his prime.
The spring turns to summer,
then on to the fall;
before long the colt hears
the winter's faint call.

When Old Faithful's season
had come to an end
the event represented
the death of a friend.
Yet just as an old year
soon passes away,
the new's right behind it
to start a new day.

Such is the case with
our dear Faithful Pete.
At his last breath his mare
put a colt on its feet.
