A free-verse poem about scenes of nature around my suburban neighborhood in Louisiana.
Even though we live in a suburban neighborhood,
we are treated to sights of nature frequently:
hummingbirds flashing their brilliant colors
as they sit sipping sugar water at the feeders,
cavorting squirrels chasing each other
around the tree by the back fence,
dogs walking their owners up and
down the sidewalks,
cats sunning on the roof of the
neighbors’ storage shed,
assorted birds drinking and bathing
in the bird bath by the grill,
robins feeding their hatchlings
in their nest atop the electric meter
on the back wall of the house,
a ‘possum patrolling the flowerbeds
the length of the block late at night,
rabbits sitting as living lawn ornaments
at night thinking themselves hidden from view,
hawks catching birds and squirrels in
survival of the fittest played out in our backyard,
and even the occasional raccoon family
looking to commit mischief in the backyard.

Having such scenes of nature enrich
our daily lives in our Louisiana suburban home
is a blessing to be both noted and treasured.
