The Magic Santa Hat
The Magic Santa Hat

35

Maria Lee was having a bad morning
She was at home for Christmas
Coming home from an extended deployment

Finding her husband
and children were now strangers

She made some hot chocolate
But the hot chocolate was too hot

She looked at the Christmas tree
Realizing there were
no presents under the tree

Just then she heard strange voices
Down the hall talking
in a strange language

Afghan and Iraqi refugees
She wondered if they
were in the Christmas spirit?

She put on her magic Santa Hat
and drank some bourbon
to get into the Christmas Spirit

Turning off the radio in disgust
Nothing but Christmas muzak
“Santa Baby” on a continuous loop

All she wanted for Christmas
was right there in front of her
she smiled and made breakfast
for her husband and children

and got the presents out
putting them under the tree
she smiled, Christmas was ready

Her husband came out
and drank coffee
and ate his breakfast

happiness beaming
from his face

she smiled
thinking perhaps
it would be a good Christmas
After all.
