NEXT MOMENT: a sonnet


[Man cannot be sure of the next moment, the next breath. It is better to live in the present than plan for the future.]



One moment we are so bubbling with life;
The next moment we mingle in the dust.
Though much we are attached to home and wife
Quitting all of these one day is a must.

Though we may for tomorrow have a hope,
It’s never guaranteed to anyone.
With present only can we ever cope;
Of future certain there can be no one.

Why plan for many a decade ahead?
Of your next breath even you can’t be sure.
Be contented with whatever you’ve had.
Amass not riches every day yet more.

Riches will take you away yet farther
From gates of heaven and from your Father.
