Ode to the Monster Under the Bed
There’s a child above my bed.
Nobody believes me, but I know he’s there.
When I wake every night, he peers under my bed to give me a fright.
Every morning as I doze off, he wriggles and squiggles and starts to cough.
He has squidgy pink toes and a runny wet nose,
And big blue eyes that are round in surprise.
So I’ll pull the carpet over my head,
To hide me from the child on my bed.

There’s a child above my bed.
Nobody believes me, but I know he’s there.
Baby children have gummy great maws and sticky wet jaws,
But my child’s older; he’s braver and bolder
And his teeth are flat, as wide and as straight as all that.
Made for crushing and mushing, I hear him crunching and munching.
So I cuddle my toys and make no noise,
For I am scared of girls and boys.
