Devastated?

Deep was the hole,
I lost my hat in.
Hollow the knowledge,
it would remain in my heart.
Isn't that the saddest thing.
It could have been my heart that I lost.
Wouldn't that have been more interesting.
That hat called back to me in an echoing voice.
"Goodbye," was the last thing that I heard.
