Red
Red

Some money having fallen on me,
I bought a car, brand spanking new,
after careful research in all the road tests
until I knew exactly the make and model
to fulfill my dream within the budget,
what they call most bang for my buck.

The dealer had just one example
precisely fitting my desired spec,
a pretty little thing of eternal allure,
sparkling in its shiny coat of red.
I test-drove it but, to tell the truth,
I loved it already - that first sight was enough.

Patience deserted me, this was my car,
the colour no consideration
(I was never flashy and set my sights
well below a blood red car),
but chance had served me well for once
and delivered to me the perfect hue.

Red it was but a little deeper,
park next to another dressed in red
and suddenly theirs looked orange,
give it a neighbour dark maroon
my baby would make it brown,
a jealous red and proud of standing out.

In many ways that car was best,
the road tests had not lied;
a little rocket at the lights,
it shamed the local hotfoots
and taught me a lesson I’ll not forget:
some reds are redder than the rest.
