Promises
Promises

Autumn and the leaves drop
like promises from the lips
of politicians in November
and what hope is there for us,
when the lies of last year
are raked in forgiveness
to the bonfires of today?

Winter and the comfort of those words
is sapped by the bitter wind
of reality, snow’s white arrival
covering the deeds of darkness,
where good intentions perish
and our weakness leaves us only
longing for the Spring of another chance.
