Action Descriptions

Yesterday at work was very normal. With both my writing and work. it was a very typical Saturday at work. not too busy at all. True, it may have been a tad busier than usual for a Saturday. But it wasn’t that much more. It didn’t stop me from writing. In fact, nothing stopped me when it comes to my writing. So, why then did I only get five scenes written yesterday at work?

That is a very good question. A question that I can’t answer because I don’t know what that answer is. The only thing that I can think of as to the reason is that I watched three movies yesterday at work. That may have slowed me down a little. But I don’t think that it did that much. Then again, maybe it did. Not because of me watching it instead of writing. That did happen a little bit. But it was mostly because I was watching them as a scriptwriter.

True, I didn’t have their scripts in my hand to study them while I watched those movies. But I did read some of each one of them before I started watching them. So, I kind of had those scripts. Maybe not in my hand, but I had them in my head. What I was mostly looking for was the action part of them. Not the Action/Adventure part, but the description part that starts each scene.

Only the action descriptions don’t just open each scene. They are throughout that scene. If there isn’t any dialogue, then there is an action description. They just have to start each scene. Sometimes that is the only action description that there is. But there’s usually more depending on what kind of a scene that it is.

I’m having a lot of trouble writing my action descriptions. I am getting better at them. But I still have a long way to go. I’m showing a lot more than I’m telling. Not as much as those scripts that I have been reading, though. They write about their past, thoughts, or feelings. And I think that is telling instead of showing. There are ways around that. But it takes up more writing to do it.

That’s another problem that I’m having with my action descriptions. They take up a lot of my scenes. I have been a two or more sentences per paragraph kind of writer. Whether it’s action or dialogue I like there to be at least two sentences. Yes, I know that need to work on breaking that habit too. I’m just not ready to do that yet.

I also know that this is my first draft. But I was hoping that it would be my final one too. It’s not. And I know that. But it’s still hard to write. Today, I’m going to continue to work on this first episode of my Water Wars scriptwriting project. And I hope that I can get at least five more scenes written. If I can do that, I will end the Teaser Act for this episode. I’m hoping that I can write a few more scenes than that, though.
