Why are calendars important?

What are the spiritual or Holy Days on your calendar?

About This Newsletter

I am retired, so the most important days on my calendar are Holy Days, Feast Days, and medical appointments. To keep track of these, I use a Baha'i Date book. The date book is formatted to show the Gregorian date and the Baha'i Date. It also tells me the names of the Baha'i months and days of the week. It is easy for me to is easy for me to deal with and I can keep it in my purse.

Letter From the Editor

Why are calendars important? Calendars, in one form or another, have been used for millennia to help us keep a bit of order our lives. Some of the earliest calendars helped mark the solstices, equinoxes, and phases of the moon. Also, each religion has its own calendar to keep track of the Holy Days, days of fasting, and days of celebration. The Baha'i, Jewish, Muslim, and Gregorian calendars are examples of these.

Some calendars are lunar, lunisolar, and solar. The Jewish calendar is a lunisolar calendar because it is based on the cycles of the sun and the moon. The Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar because it is based on the cycles of the moon. The Gregorian calendar is a solar calendar because it is based on the time it takes for Earth to revolve around the Sun.

The Baha'i Calendar, which was created by the Bab and confirmed by Baha'u'llah, is a solar calendar. It consists of nineteen months of nineteen days each, with four or five Intercalary Days between the months of Mulk and Ala. Most of the Holy Days are fixed to a specific day in a specific month. The only Holy days that move are the Birth of the Bab and the Birth of Baha'u'llah. These two days are celebrated, on successive days, following the eight new moon after Naw-Ruz.

How do you keep track of the important days in your year? Do you use the calendar on your smart phone? Do you use a wall calendar or a date book? I attempted to use the calendar on my smart phone, but with no success. The main reason was the difficulty in entering all the dates I wanted to keep track of. I'm not sure what caused the problem. Anyway, I decided I was better off using a date book rather than any other type of calendar.

Leslie Loo writes: Hi! Love the newsletter! Wanted to share a Bible verse:

“And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭16:26‬ ‭NLT‬‬

graybabe writes: I believe the soul is at the seat of the mind of a human being. After death, the soul remains and is free to go to heaven, or hell.

Jaeyne of the Free Fab Five writes: Yes, I do believe, though I prefer not to say why. I very much appreciate you approach to the topic. It's balanced, undemanding, and provides room for fair discussion. Thanks for that *Smile*.

Lazy Writer est 4/24/2008 writes: I believe God gives us a soul the moment we are conceived. It is the soul that makes us who we are. I believe if you have accepted Christ as Savior, then the moment you die, your soul goes directly to Christ.

Zeke writes: And of course unlike the body the soul lives forever. All we can pray for is that it continues its life with our Creator.

Mary Ann MCPhedran writes: Although their are many religions and we are allowed to chose which ever we faith we follow we will all arrive in Gods Kingdom. I don't believe in hell, but I do believe in purgetry, we will wait to be invited to God's kingdom.

QueenOwl ~ A New Day Dawns writes: Here's the second part to your song, Snow Is Writing Poetry.
I learned it in Children's Sunday School, perhaps like you did.

"Hide it under the bushel, No!
I'm gonna let it shine.
Hide it under the bushel, No!
I'm gonna let it shine,
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine!"
