Woden Pie 2
Woden Pie 2

Let me tell you the tale of Woden Pie,
a suitable yarn under lowering skies,
for grim his demeanour and dark were his eyes,
foul rumours about his deeds did fly.

‘Tis said that he wandered abroad at night,
an ominous figure of shadow and gloom,
he spoke in hushed tones of forthcoming doom
and frightened young children who ran from his sight.

His clothes were all tattered and dirty and worn,
may once have been coloured but now were all grey,
his hair was dishevelled and likely to stray,
I’ve heard the wind howled on the day he was born.

He lived in a house on the top of Spook’s Hill,
a crumbling old place that was turning to dust;
the idea of its haunting was something to trust,
its windows were broken by boys for the thrill.

And so the legend of Woden Pie formed
until the old man seemed a creature apart;
mayhap it was hearsay that blackened his heart,
but one night the clouds did gather and storm.

So dark was the hour that nothing was seen,
we all heard the sound of the house in such pain;
in the dawn no sign of the house there remain’d
and Woden Pie gone as though never he’d been.

The old man has vanished, departed it seems
for some fabled Elysia up in the sky,
yet his memory lingers as we ask ourselves why,
did we see him last night or was it a dream?
