Promises
Promises

Promises,
stuck like dry flour
at the back of the throat,
nagging and niggling,
while procrastination balks
at duty multiplied.

Promises,
freely given,
careless castoffs of the moment,
rash essays to gallantry,
now transformed
to coercion self inflicted.

Promises,
once bright and shining,
in youth so promising,
now worn and tarnished,
fulfilled as only
promises.
