I Know You Did It
I looked over at Sari. Her calm demeanor seemed painted on like oil paint over a marred surface. A fake over something deeper.
I know you did it.
I kept staring at her hoping that my gaze would chip away at her confidence.
She would not meet my eyes. Instead she stood perfectly still as if in her stillness the moment would pass.
I would not let it go.
I know you did it.
The words in my head seemed to shout at her.
Her eye began to twitch.
I bit the inside of my lip. Was she starting to break?
Her eyes closed. I could see her chest rise as she fought, pulling in a breath to calm herself. Her clasped hands twisted.
I know you did it.
If she doesn't say anything, I will.
I wait another beat, then turn to the head nurse. "Ms. Durster I saw...."
I hear her exhale a breath. Head down, she begins, "Ms. Durster - It was me."

165 words.
