Hook

Is there a spiritual significance to human right?

About This Newsletter

“We declare that human rights are for all of us, all the time: whoever we are and wherever we are from; no matter our class, our opinions, our sexual orientation.”
Former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

“A right delayed is a right denied.”
Martin Luther King, Jr.

“Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home – so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any maps of the world. … Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere. Without concerned citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world.”
Eleanor Roosevelt

“There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice,
but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.”

Elie Wiesel

Letter From the Editor

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was released by the United Nations on December 10, 1948. This year is the 75th anniversary of its proclamation. The first paragraph in the Declaration's preamble states that recognizing both the dignity and rights of the entire human race is one of the prerequisites for the establishment of justice, peace, and freedom on Earth.

When I realized that this year marked the 75th anniversary of this wonderful and thought-provoking document. I almost cried, because of what is happening across the world today. After that, I paused to say a prayer for humanity that was revealed by Baha'u'llah. It was at this point that I asked myself, "Is there a spiritual significance to human rights?"

I have to answer this question with, "Yes!" The answer is yes, because I believe that humanity is the creation of one God, one Unknowable Creator. I believe that the human race is descended from the same original parents. I believe that the human species began its evolutionary journey in Africa and spread out across the planet from there. However, I also believe that each human being has to make up his or her own mind on this subject.

The next question is, "How do I assist in helping in the recognition of human rights?" Right now the only thing I can do is say a prayer for humanity. I will probably be able to think of other things after a few prayers. What are your answers to the questions asked in this newsletter? Please let me know.

Also, a new Gregorian year is approaching. Are there any questions you would like me to attempt to answer? What are your spiritual goals for the New Year?
