1958 in Burrell Hollow
[E] Memories of childhood and rust in the eye.

1958 in Burrell Hollow

A child of six will never forget:

When Little Dot removed rust from eyes
sitting on the back porch swing
shielded by blue morning vines.

That in the house the fragrant bread
filled our lives with more than crumbs
that forty years later feed us still.

When the redbird chirped flying over
the sidewalk painted red, we knew
in our joy he had come for grandpa.

Nasturtiums grew fragrant in white tires.
Our job to pick for grandma each day
and place in water by the window.

Swelling beets at the roots of willows
pointed the path to the blackberries
Uncle George would pick for jam or pie.

Echoes of a time not so long past
when steam whistles blew along the tracks
of Burrell Hollow and our summer dreams.(replace dreams)
