WHAT MAKES US TICK?
WHAT MAKES US TICK?

[Our thoughts and actions are often actuated by the slightest or remotest hint.]

We don’t know what makes us tick.
Often it’s it’s a tiny trick.

Fleeting glance from a fair dame
Can much valor put to shame.

At home husband is at loss,
Though at work he may be boss.

One may dream of a serpent,
And then carbon ring invent.

Even the sound of a clock
Can cure a poor writer’s block!

Feeble cry of hungry child
Can make a cruel heart mild.

His retribution for wrong
Can put fear in the strong.

Image of Jesus on cross
Does a stamp of faith emboss.

* The 19th century German chemist Kekule had been researching the molecular structure of benzene, the basis of all organic chemistry, but did not have a clue. Then, one day, he dreamed of a snake with its tail in its mouth. After waking up he interpreted the dream to mean that the structure was a closed carbon ring. This was the breakthrough he needed.
