The Writing.Com Rating System

It is important that all members be familiar with the rating system. Anyone opening a piece of work expects and deserves the rate posted to be accurate.

Also, parents trust Writing.Com to keep the site safe for their children. It is up to all of us to maintain that trust.

Excerpt; * The Writing.Com Content Rating System (CRS) is our own, unique system for rating online content and is proprietary to our community.

Authors at Writing.Com may choose the content about which to write; they do not, however, have the final say of a rating for it.

If the Writing.Com Staff or Moderators feel that an item is inappropriately rated as defined by our guidelines, we will adjust the rating as we see fit. This only changes the rating and will not censor it from public view. Writing.Com Staff and Moderators will not argue with an Author over his or her rating.

.....The Writing.Com Ratings.....

E : Everyone
ASR : Adult Supervision Recommended
13+ : Recommended for Readers 13 Years and Older Only
18+ : Recommended for Readers 18 Years and Older Only
GC : May Contain Graphic Content
XGC : May Contain Extreme Graphic Content
NPL : Not Publicly Listed

.....Rate Your Item's Intro.....
(Title and Brief Description)

After deciding on your item's title and brief description, please assign one of the following ratings to it, so that the Writing.Com system can determine on which public listings to display it.

E: Everyone of all ages
Non-E: Not Everyone of all ages

An E-rated Intro is suitable for everyone of any age. There are absolutely no references to sex (other than gender), drugs (legal/illegal), alcohol, violence, cursing (of any kind), derogatory names or any combinations thereof. These titles are displayed for members who have their rating preferences set to 18+ and below.

A Non-E rated Intro is not suitable for everyone of any age. There may be references to sex, drugs, alcohol, violence, cursing, derogatory names or any combinations thereof. These titles are displayed for all members who have their rating preferences set to also include GC and above.

This Intro rating is not displayed on public listings and is only used as a guide for the item's placement within Writing.Com's public listings. General members can only see an item's Content rating on public listings; the Intro's rating is only visible from within the item's header.

.....Rate Your Item's Content.....

Authors must choose a rating for an item's content in order for it to show up on Writing.Com's public listings. All members have a rating preference, whether that be our default setting of E-18+ or a setting of their own. An item's content must be rated correctly when being displayed on our public listings.

Please judge your content based on the following Writing.Com rating guidelines:
E : Everyone
ASR : Adult Supervision Recommended
13+ : Recommended for Readers 13 Years and Older Only
18+ : Recommended for Readers 18 Years and Older Only
GC : May Contain Graphic Content
XGC : May Contain Extreme Graphic Content

Go to this page and become familiar with the FURTHER EXPLANATION for each rate. Don't attempt to guess or decide on a rate by some other criteria. Use the criteria listed here. I have listed E-Rating as an example. Study each rate for yourselves by clicking on "Content Rating System (CRS)"   by The StoryMistress

Further explanation for each level:

E - absolutely no cursing or slang that is meant as a replacement for swearing (such as "dang", "darn", etc.). This includes implications of swearing such as "What the..." or "Holy ****!".

If you leave the rate box blank on your intro and/or content, you will find you're not getting read very often. If you want to be read, rate it!

If you rate it too low and the Mod-Squad finds it; it will be changed by them. To avoid it being changed for you, become familiar with the words and content that require a higher rating. *Smile*

Happy Writing!

Dearest Esprit,

You did it again! I am still three weeks behind on my newsletters (reviewing the selections keeps me up in review totals but few raids on my port result), but I am sending my feedback as soon as I read the editorial.

AH, thank you for printing my 2 a.m. ramblings on your last newsletter so I could see that I really don't function well when I am sleep deprived. I also apologize for the non-E-rated word ("taxes") in my last post. I refuse to be caught with my receipts down in 2006!

*Laugh* Keep reading, Nannette. You'll be read. It all evens out, eventually.

A wonderful editorial on dialogue tags Esprit. Some really useful and practical hints which acknowledge and honour each writer's individuality. I think your words are encouraging and freeing. Keep up the excellent work.

Thanks for the kind words. I especially like 'encouraging and freeing' writers. *Smile*

Regarding dialogue tags, one thing my college writing professor said, "Never use a non-verbal tag." For example, it would be wrong to write:
"I'm so thrilled your mother's coming with us dear" he smiled sarcastically.
However, that would work as two separate sentences, implying that he was the speaker and clarifying his insincerity. Great newsletter. I'm not a newbie, but I still read and review newbies, and appreciate you noticing them.

Thanks for the tip, Mike! We love 'em!

Thanks for all the feedback, it really is the stuff we all write for. We appreciate it.
