Storytime and Downpour

Storytime and Downpour
Slooshy tennis shoes, as I wade through the torrents,
Always stretch my face long, cold, and blue.
Being soggy is for me an abhorrence,
But the children are giggling while they sample raindrops.
With their coats half open, their shoes one big splash,
They’re stomping at rivelets. Grumpy, I tell them to stop.
A burst of light and a barrel of drum roar --
The children all scream and bolt for our classroom.
Bathrooms done, I smile. It's storytime and downpour.

Note:
On rainy days, teachers often get no breaks. We take our students to the bathroom, sometimes without shelter, walking through the puddles, the wet sky.
This poem was about such days. I have many memories of them -- some good, some sloshy with shivers.
