Lessons in Portuguese

Fortress blocked in stone,

Once mighty as its stern knight,

Now pale as whalebone.

Green-coned turrets rise

Keepsakes of ancient mistakes

In soldiers’ closed eyes.

Such medieval fame

Should ban all such fate in man,

But war’s still the same.
