Today
         Today,

the lake was smooth.
It beckoned and I
seemed to hear it
say, “Walk on me.”

But I cannot forget
the ragged crashing
waves of yesterday.
If I leave the

safety of my
sandy perch
on shore the lake’s
glassy surface

would crack, undoing
mirrored sky, releasing
concealed waves to crest
and pull me under.
