Wimoweh: the lion sleeps tonight.
On the passing of Hank Medress:

The lion sleeps tonight

and the zebra sighs relief
among the grass that never weeps
until the rains beat chaff to dust.

This quiet night envelopes dreams
of youth and song, of wimoweh
... wimoweh ... wimoweh.

We chant the Zulu words
in deep respect for Hank Medress,
who'll never pass this way again:

the lion sleeps tonight.

IMAGES:

I think I saw a brown thrasher! Last night it had to be a flicker up in the tree. And what was the cardinal doing gathering items found in the grass? What strange birds are these?

The other day:

mullein: stiff stem of pale green leaves, pale yellow flowers.
non-evenness of bricks; scattered sticks beneath a plane tree.
red monarda, brown-eyed susans, cleome.

THOUGHTS:

What is it like to live a life of constant apologies? At times I've felt that I owed everyone, or that I was owed in return. I've met people who break everything they touch, who've developed the quick apology to excuse their actions. Some things, however, cannot be 'fixed'. What then is it like to live a life of constantly breaking and fixing things, feelings, people's dreams? Are apologies enough?
