Two poems: "Oriole", "Emptying"
Oriole

This is the gift:
one oriole hunting bugs,
head up,
head down
among the old elm's twigs.

This the moment,
begged by a boy only ten,
at wonder with a sight
he had never seen,
a dream from some coloring book.

This too comes to pass,
a poem Kilmer thought he'd never see:
one oriole,
one elm,
one me.

Emptying

The nest empties of the sparrow,
shot out the cannon of the metal T
of the pole that beholds a purple rope
holding the wet whiteness of wash
from flying on with a breeze.
In the morning, chirps.
In the evening, the silence of rabbits
and the flirt of fireflies, the mosquitoes
that draw succulence from the night.
All seek to celebrate life.
Yet the dawn comes when the nest
remains empty ...
                             and          slowly
starry lamps go out light by light.

IMAGES:

Feathers scattered around a carcass; spent yucca blossoms below a stem that weeps without fruit.

Four young women playing a drinking game of tossing a frisbee at a Corona Light perched on a plastic pole.

Poppy seeds clinging to fingers; the dry roughness of hollyhock seeds.

THOUGHTS:

Scrolls of the sycamore ... the shedding of old bark ... what's written there in the pawprints of the squirrel?

Calmer now than for a long time, but more personal details are kept in the other blog, "Hoarfrosts from Hell [GC]

¿PREGUNTA?

Anyone going to the Red Dirt Festival in Shawnee, Oklahoma on November 2nd and 3rd?
Or going to Nimrod in Tulsa on October 19th and 20th?
I went to both in 2003 and have wanted to return ever since. Now I can.
Any other festivals I should know about in the U.S., Canada or México?
