Streetwise but Feeling A Little Foolish

the day is full of clouds, a flotilla
of indefinite things -- thoughts that remain
and chisel me into shadows of dreams

do not say the noise of traffic hits me --
I am distressed by a hot, bitter sun
I am standing there, waiting for the light

down the road, in the distance, invisible
people come slowly into view; walking
towards me with parcels that smell of hope

suddenly it is my turn and I step
out into a bright  metallic river --
I hold my breath behind this wall of flesh

I don't speak to anyone, I am alone
believing the story that I can get home
