A Walk Down Memory Lane: Thoughts on Moving
I do not like to move because it is stressful and I never know what too get rid of and what to keep. The last time I moved was when Mom and I moved from the apartment to this house. We moved from a small place to a bigger place, which, I realize now, was a huge mistake. We moved a lot of stuff from the apartment to the house, but it did not fill the entire house. While living here we collected more stuff and I have to get rid of most of it because I am moving to a studio apartment, at least that is my plan today.

Making a House a Home

Unwrapping
early Christmas presents:
I remove

layer by layer
self-sticking decorative paper
from wooden shelves.

Revealing
the naked wood
to the light of day,

I let knotted eyes
look again
upon the real world.
1 Sultan 152 B.E.

I wrote that poem when we first moved into this house. I wrote it after cleaning out shelves in the pantry. I presume I will write another poem when I move into the new place. Now, I just want to write a poem to alleviate the stress of moving to a smaller place.

Unmaking a Home

Item by item
I sort through the stuff
accumulated over the years.

Two people can acquire
huge amounts
of precious junk
that must me removed
when one person
has to move.

Food for Thought: “I give you this to take with you:
Nothing remains as it was. If you know this, you can
begin again, with pure joy in the uprooting.”
