Washington DC State or District?
Sunday, July 03, 2016
The Sunday News!

Washington, DC is reviving a campaign to become the 51st state in the union , and if successful the area's name could be changed to New Columbia. It's important to note that DC was established to exist outside of the borders of any state in an effort to not favor the Capitol's home state over any other in the country. Should the government allow DC to become a state or function like one? And if you do not reside in the US, but your nation's capital city is within a particular area of the country, do you see that as being a detriment or an advantage to where you live?

Red Dragon Just a small thought about Creation Saturday. We are in the midst of haying season here so yesterday and Today I spent time cleaning last years hay chafe out of hay stalls before the new hay is put in and we K and I dumped it into some wood chuck holes so now the wood chucks will be eating or digging from the bottom to the top.
So, how do they get from the bottom to the top of this?*Laugh*

Washington D.C.

I really would like a week to research information about this subject. For instance the participants of the Washington D.C. governing body do not have the greatest financial track record over the years. The school system, police, fire, and property management of homes has brought up as many problems as there are in any larger state.

Plus, the fact that congress can meddle in the affairs of what is basically a city not a state must make it difficult to govern.

At this point, with the small amount of research done on Wikipedia.org I have to think it should be governed as a state that takes care of the seat of our countries government. The land as a functioning entity has special problems. The threatening climate of Isis means that the city has special needs with the seat of the countries government housed within its borders. It is always on high alert.

Turning it into a state would require elections of senators and representatives. This, would give the city an individual say in the government of the country. It would put a distance between its own government and the congress, while still requiring the city to maintain special surveillance of the Capital buildings.

I’m not sure how much land we are talking about. Obviously, since Virginia withdrew its parcel and left all the land on one side of the river I want to know if it is totally a city district or is some of the land protected in parks or federal reserves?

I know if there is a way for this to become a state and then, the state to be manipulated to the detriment of the rest of the states, someone will probably try to use the state power in this manner. The reason for it not being a state was to keep it neutral as far as congressional power was concerned.

I will be interested to read what others think or know about this subject and, I may continue to learn more as time goes forward. Perhaps, if I delve into it even more I will find out why they keep trying to change it into a state.

I did find out that Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico are counted as states by some people even though they are not states.
Also, the D. C. part is for Christopher Columbus so why are they choosing his name over George Washington? Since Columbus was not the first person to visit the new world?

See this just opened a lot of questions about the whole situation. I think they should make it a state and move the capital into the center of the country but I'm sure that is not going to happen.
