Halloween Gift

On Halloween night someone gave me a fright
a pounding on my door suggested they wanted much more
then just a bag full of peanut butter cups
or candy corn.

Cautiously I opened the door
expecting to see the SWAT Team
or K-nine Unit
with guns drawn and ready to search
my apartment for illegal substances
or crazy clowns.

When I looked on my stoop,
I saw two pumpkins,
one white and one orange,
with a little black kitten
sitting between them.

I picked up the purring kitten,
read the note on its collar:
Please accept these tokens
of our gratitude
for all the prayers you've said
and all smiles you given
in the years that you've lived
in this neighborhood.

I picked up the pumpkins,
placed them on a stand
in the window
and opened a can of salmon
to share with my new
kitten friend.

Teddy Bear At Work

I took my teddy bear to work
I placed him on my chair
then I poured two cups of coffee
and sit them on my desk.

All my office mates walked past
my cubicle,
laughed at me and my bear,
and then returned to their desk.

When the boss walked past
he saw the bear and me at work,
then he called an office wide meeting
in the conference room.

Boss man sat at the head of the table,
with his teddy bear at his side
he said:
"Everyone who brought their teddy bears
can take the rest of the day off,
while the rest of you work overtime."
