Good-bye 2016
I'll celebrate your passing
in comfort of my apartment
in front of a warm television.

My Favorite New Year's Eve Memory

Memories whisper
delight shedding joyful tears,
with Mama and me ringing
in a brand New Year.

Mom and I had two New Year's Eve traditions that we alternated from one year to the next. Sometimes we went to bed before the rest of the planet rung in the New Year. The reason for this was that Mom, a food server, sometimes had to work on New Year's Day and, therefore, had to get up early. On those occasions when Mom didn't have to work mornings or was off the next day we stayed up and watched the rest of the world ring in the New Year. At these times we would brew a carafe of coffee or make cups of hot chocolate to drink while we watched our favorite local news channel show the festivities on the Las Vegas Strip and around the world. This was my favorite way of ringing in the New Year because Mom was with me.

Better Than Gold

Better than gold is the delight
of a light in the darkest night
shining across my mind and soul
when I meditate on
the words of God's Glory.

Better than gold is a poem
inspired by a dream
of walking in paradise
and resting in the shade
of the Tree of Life.
