will sometimes give us a fright
until we turn on the light.

Dictionary.com's Word of the Day   for Sunday was "calliopean", meaning "piercingly loud; resembling a calliope in sound". Tell us about a time when you've experienced what you might consider to be the worst loud sound you can imagine, and how did you react to it? Today's fee is 500 GPs.

Calliopean Noise

Darkness embraced,
as night descended
rocking my weary mind
in the peaceful cradle
of sleep.

A piercing noise shocked
my mind awake
driving out pleasant
dream images.

I sat up,
looked around
for alien invaders
before I realized
the battery in the smoke alarm
had screeched
its final good-bye.
