On this day
in 1820 the Venus de Milo
was discovered in an underground cave
on the island of Milos in the Aegean Sea.

Saturday is a grizzly day,
wind growling through the palm trees
sends chills up the spines of pedestrians
and one cup of steaming joe
isn't enough of an accommodation
to drive out the hollow look of terror
from the eyes of a homeless man
begging for coffee outside the door
of the Micky D's
on the corner of Maryland Parkway and Sahara Avenue.

Somewhere
just off the Las Vegas Strip
a crawler ascends the white wall
of a cash-by-the-hour
motel room;
the roach ignores
the john and his "date"
performing bedroom acrobatics,
while outside
her pimp
trolls for another customer.

This is a dangerous city
for anyone who panics
at the drop of a pickle;
evacuation
is difficult
because parking places
at McCarran Airport
are an expensive luxury
and what happens in Vegas
eventually makes
the National News.
