An expectant crowd stands as the bagpipes enter.
A procession of gowns and mortar boards, a trail
of black and maroon and purple. This is how we'll
remember you: young and expectant, gown swishing,
maroon cord around your neck, one among a row
of black birds on a bench, like penitents begging.
Then they call your name, granting your most fervent wish.
They place a cape over your head; it hangs down your back.
Recession pipes bellow, beg us to follow out.
We take photos. Few turn out, but we won't forget.
