What were some of the things or people that were difficult to leave for you, for someone you know, or for a character in your story, and what were the results of leaving those things?

I left my hometown and moved to a town 75 miles away on a government official's word that I would be able to get a government job as a result. I jumped through all the hoops he said I should jump through and ended up empty handed. The moral of the story is to never trust a bureaucrat.
