My mother and grandmother read to me. Among other books, they read Grimms Fairy Tales. As they read, I could visualize the story in my mind. In fact, I once attempted to go into a fairy tale world. I don't remember the name of the story, or the names of the characters. In the part of the story I remember the main character, a young princess, ran counterclockwise around her castle and ended up in another land or dimension. I ran counterclockwise around my house seven times, as did the princess in the story. To say I was disappointed when I finished my counterclockwise run, and was still in my own yard, is an understatement.

As I grew, I migrated from fairy tales to other books with more mature themes. I read romance novels for teenagers, but did not find them as exciting as the fairy tales. I moved on to action/adventure, fantasy, science fiction, and horror. I found these books more exciting and interesting than the purely romance novels. I enjoy romance if it is part of another genre, but I normally do not read romance novels.

I smile, when I remember my mother reading to me. She was a single working mother, so she did not have much time to spend with us. However, she took time to read and play with us. She let us help her with the housework so that we could be with her. She read bedtime stories to us when she was not working graveyard shift. The times that Mama read to me are some of my most precious memories.
