Cottage Description

I longed to be transported into that quiet little landscape, to walk up the path, to take a key from my pocket and open the cottage door. Inside a fire crackled in the fireplace, and a small round oak table, with a redwood chair, set in the center of the room. An antique rocking chair set by the window. Against the far wall was a cot, covered with a handmade quilt.

Memories of the Destruction

In my memory,
a sympathetic silence
embraced Blackwell, Oklahoma,
after the F5 tornado
of 1955.

Scraps of houses
were scattered
across the neighborhood
where the tornado
touched down.

Aunt Pearl's home
was completely
destroyed,
but she
and my uncle survived.

On Sunday,
after the tornado,
the churches were packed:
the living
petitioning the Almighty
to pardon
the sins
of those the tornado killed.

Was there a positive outcome?

Most of the houses were rebuilt,
still
there was something missing:
like the lost lid
of a popcorn popper
