Rain
Rain

Rain is so many things;
the sudden downpour of Africa
churning the dust to mud
in seconds, reigning over the earth
for a brief time, holding the reins
of lightning release and thunder
splitting the air with sudden assault,
sating the parched thirst of the land.
It’s the soft rain of England,
silently spreading its damp touch
to the world, secure in its reign
over the valleys and dales,
reining in the light so that
the hills are silvered in mist
and the clouds come home to roost.
And it’s the fierce rain of the new world,
tearing pieces off the landscape
in its anger and disdain,
asserting the mighty power of its reign,
flooding the plains with its waters,
never loosing the reins of destruction
as it rends its path from south to north
and west to east, the sideways rain
as the hammer of the weather.

Rain is all these things and more,
friend and foe, ruler and servant,
giver of growth and greening the planet,
breaker of hearts and terrible master.
Rain is the promise and the betrayal,
and we are the rain.

If you listen, follow Paul’s bass line at first - he is an astounding bassist. Then notice Ringo’s drumming - exceptionally inventive for him on this one. Finally, be aware that this is the first recording in which they used reverse vocals and guitars. And, of course, the song is brilliant. The year was 1966.
