An Irrational Ration
An Irrational Ration

I’m a tolerant man,
there’s not much I dislike,
though I will admit
the older I get,
the more things detest me -
take cucumber f’rinstance,
that in my youth
I could take or leave
but now gives me
near-terminal heartburn.
And, as I age,
they start forming a queue,
adding their names to the list
of things that hate me;
pizza was one
and lasagne too
(those Italians delight
in designing food
that hurts me).
Salt I’m not allowed
and don’t fry that stuff,
brown bread will do
but make sure it has
whole wheat and other seeds
sprinkled on top,
and don’t even think
in your wildest of dreams
of that worst of them all,
sugar. I love them all,
every single one,
but they have formed a plot
to bring me to ruin
and in all this food devastation,
the one that I blame
is one that I’ve hated
right from day one.
Now don’t tell a soul
but my bête noir of foods
is one I can eat without dying,
not even a twinge,
the terrible thing is
that it’s done nothing wrong,
but I really detest and proscribe
(it’s not the taste though -
that’s not so bad)
my numnum nemesis
that I’ll never abide
(and don’t ask me why,
it’s likely subliminal)
the food that I reject,
with expressions disgusting,
is my enemy sworn
(and its no surprise
that it refuses to fit
the flow of this verse)
the awful, vile, revolting,
thrice accursed
pineapple.
