My primary Writing.com blog.
Logocentric (adj). Regarding words and language as a fundamental expression of an external reality (especially applied as a negative term to traditional Western thought by postmodernist critics).

Sometimes I just write whatever I feel like. Other times I respond to prompts, many taken from the following places:

I'm piggybacking on Brooklyn 's prompt for blog posts about "three things" in a variety of categories. I'm not sure if this is going to be a daily thing, a "post them all this weekend" thing, or a "whenever I get around to it" kind of thing, but I'm committed to blogging about everything on her list. For reference, the categories are:

Theme: Three Things
*HeartB* Three things you can’t go without.
*HeartP* Three celebrity crushes.
*HeartO* Three favorite book characters.
*HeartGR* If you had to evacuate your home because of a natural disaster, what three things would you take with you?
*HeartGR* Three pet peeves.
*HeartT* Three things you’d do if you weren’t so afraid.
*HeartY* Three favorite TV shows.

I might as well take these in descending order, so here are my three favorite book characters.

Sand dan Glokta. Joe Abercrombie writes pretty great, gritty hard/low fantasy and his First Law trilogy is certainly no exception. In a series full of memorable characters, there are perhaps none more memorable than Sand dan Glokta, a former handsome, talented swordsman turned twisted inquisitor after capture and years of torture by a rival nation. Abercrombie spends a large amount of time featuring Glokta's external struggles with being a cripple, as well as his internal struggles to come to terms with the fact that he's a broken shade of his former self. As a reader, you vacillate between loving and hating him, admiring and pitying him, rooting for and against him. He's scathingly funny and one of the most original characters I've read before or since.

Lisbeth Salander. She's one of the strongest and most vivid female characters in recent memory. I love the fact that she's both extraordinarily talented and broken, that she's introverted and very possibly has mental health issues, but also has a distinct moral code and isn't at all afraid to act on it when it's in defense of others. What I love most about this character is that she doesn't fit neatly into any one box. You dislike or disagree with her choices as much as you like and agree with them, she could just as easily need your help as be the one helping you... she's a paradox and one that's truly fascinating to get to know over the course of the Millennium series.

Aech. If you haven't read the book or seen the movie for Ready Player One yet and plan to, don't read any further. There be spoilers ahead! *Bigsmile* I absolutely loved this book (and the movie) from beginning to end, and a big part of it was the way it just kept constantly surprising me with unexpected twists and turns. Whether it was the nuances of the challenges, or the inventiveness with which Ernest Cline managed to combine so many pop culture references, this book was a revelation when I read it. And one of the biggest in-story revelations was discovering that, unlike many of the other characters who have OASIS avatars that are vaguely reminiscent of the players' actual selves, athletic, macho, straight male avatar of Aech is actually played by an African American lesbian named Helen Harris. It was a shocking moment in the book, and the way that Cline handled it (her reticence and fear about revealing the truth, and Wade's acceptance of who she actually is) had a lot of emotional resonance that really made this more than a fun sci-fi romp.

I might as well take these in descending order, so here are my three celebrity crushes

Jennifer Lawrence. She's an exceptionally talented actress, beautiful, and has a wonderfully down-to-earth personality. It isn't often you run across an actor who's had as much success as she's had who can still be self-deprecating and funny. Seriously, check out any of the YouTube videos online with excerpts from her interviews and other appearances. She's hilarious, doesn't take the whole fame thing too seriously, and has this great DGAF attitude that's exceedingly rare among celebrities of her status.

Rachel Weisz. Another amazing actress who just seems really sweet. Plus she's English, and I do love a good British accent. *Wink* While I do remember her from her first major Hollywood film Chain Reaction, I think I really noticed her in the The Mummy, which was followed closely by About A Boy, and Runaway Jury, each of which were roles that I was really captivated by. So by the time she did The Brothers Bloom, she was already one of my favorite actors.

Pink. I'm fascinated by her. I don't know whether it's the way she constantly re-creates her image, or the fact that I really like her music, or that she's both adventurous and incredibly outspoken about important causes... it's probably a bit of a combination of all three, to be honest. She just seems like a really interesting person that would be fun to hang out with and get to know.

In looking back at these three (and the several other celebrities who I was considering for this blog entry), it's pretty clear that the common throughline for most of them is that they're smart, funny, adventurous, compassionate, and really good at what they do. Which I suppose probably makes a whole lot of sense, because I married a woman who's smart, funny, adventurous, compassionate, and really good at what she does. I never really considered it before, but apparently I do have a type! *Laugh*

These were originally posted in "Invalid Post"  , but I'm also including them here too for the purposes of the review component of "I Write in 2018. The prompt for this month's "Cards Against Authors was a card that says "Problems are not stop signs, they are ____". Please see the "Cards Against Authors forum if you're not familiar with the rules of Cards Against Humanity. *Wink*

1. Problems are not stop signs, they are actually green lights on a one way street you're driving down in the wrong direction. (15 words)

2. Problems are not stop signs, they are those "hill with a steep grade" signs you see two seconds after you realize your brakes are out. (18 words)

3. Problems are not stop signs, they are speed bumps. Easy to overcome, as long as you don't go so fast that it ruins your alignment. (18 words)

I might as well take these in descending order, here are the three things I can't go without. And I'm interpreting "can't" to mean something I really, really care about and would be devastated to be without... mostly because the three literal answers would be "food, water, and air" and those just aren't as fun to write about. *Wink*

Art. I wouldn't want to live in a world that doesn't produce art. And I'm using art as an umbrella term for everything from painting to sculpture to music to architecture to stand-up comedy, and to the stories created for books, movies, television, video games, etc. No matter what form it comes in, I can't think of anything better than experiencing the beauty in this world created by fellow human beings. I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't regularly experience and appreciate the creative art that other people put out in the world.

New Experiences. I'm not the kind of person who is content to just do the same thing day in, day out. I'm always excited by the prospect of the unknown, whether it's traveling somewhere I've never been before, eating food I've never tasted before, or moving onto new jobs when the existing one feels a little stale. There are some people who are happy working the same job for their entire career, or always ordering the same thing at the same restaurant every Friday night, or reading the same favorite book over and over again... and that's just not me. I need the excitement and adventure of new experiences on a fairly regular basis.

"Me" Time. While I do genuinely enjoy getting together with friends, and venturing out to see what the world has to offer, I also need a fair amount of time to myself. I'm a naturally introspective person, a thinker, and someone who is mostly an introvert at heart. I have to have chunks of time that are just for me to be alone. Depending on the mood, I may want to read, go for a walk, write, even nap. I'm generally considered a pretty friendly, easy to get along with kind of guy, and a big part of the reason I have that laid-back kind of personality is because I spend a good amount of time in isolation processing things on my own in my own way. I don't even want to think about what kind of a personality I would have if I didn't have those moments of self care. If I had to constantly be around people and interacting with them all the time, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't handle it well. *Think*
