Well Im going to tell you from experience, women are very hard to read at times. but if she has been your friend for two years, youre probably out of luck if you want to date her. If she was attracted to you at some point, you blew it by not acting on it at that time.
But all is not lost. Women love men who arent afraid to ask them out. I have known some of the UGLIEST people who for what ever reason (drugs or alcohol in many cases) had the rocks to take the initiative, and they get action. Not always quality, but I have seen some attractive women with these people. So if you want to rekindle that attraction you have to make her think that you have never really been afraid to ask her out, rather you are just figuring out how attracted you are to her.
That being said, you could have a chance if you play it right. I dont know enough about your relationship with her to give you a good plan but Ill give you a few thoughts.
Do you go out on anything resembling dates with her? If you do, then set up another one but make it a little more special. For example, take her somewhere a little classier than you usually hang out with her. Get her to dress up a little. It doesnt have to be tuxedo time, just something different than usuall. Make it memorable. See a play then have dinner or coffee. Go fishing off a pier. It doesnt matter but at some point in the evening you want to be in a romantic situation. Get close to her and stay close to her.
And last but not least, youve heard this a thousand times, relax and dont be afraid of anything. Have confidence!!!! When the time is right, it doesnt matter if your talking about birdbaths, tell her you are going to kiss her or you want to kiss her. Then do it. If she doesnt want to, she will say so immediately. If she is open to it, she may be caught off guard. DONT take that as a no. That is a yes and a maybe all in one. If you hesitate now she will see the insecurity and it will kill the moment. If you give her just about one and a half seconds then kiss her, she will likely let you.
Dont let that word likely scare you. If she stops you at the last second there could be two things going on, either she's playing the old good girl routine or she is unsure of how she feels about it. Both are survivable. If she is unsure you will alleviate that by remaining confident. Tell her youve wanted to do that for a long time. Ask her why she is afraid. Tell her to kiss first and analyze later.
Whatever you do during those few seconds that seem like lifetimes, dont back away. She will see that as her way out.
If this doesnt work, stay confident, keep your smile. Tell her that you realized how much you like her and you want to date her but let her know if she is not interested then it's ok. This may be difficult, but you must stay confident and try to go back to having a good time on your date. Let that whole situation go and just move on like it never happened. She will be very attracted to your easygoing confidence and could very likely change her mind that night. It may take longer than that, but I promise you that your confidence in this situation will eat at her making her more and more attracted to you over time.
The only way to mess this up is to not let her go if she isnt ready. The expression "if you love someone let them go" is a horrible understatement. I have had women who thought they were done with me come crawling back when I surprised them by not chasing them when they were gone. This is a very powerful and simple concept and it is the foundation of confidence. Let her know you want her and arent afraid to make a move, but dont ever let her think you cant live without her.
