independence or love?
entry in Zoyas diary 24th May 2005

I looked at him with amazement, this wasn’t the first time he had brought this up, but the way he said it today was different….so different I could actually believe the man even though from what I had learnt in life, men, were not to be trusted. Before I could think he sat down on his knees, and took out The Box, in a split second it was open and there in front of my was every woman’s dream come true. Except mine.

“Imad, u do know what you’re doing, right?”

“Im surer of it now than I ever was before, I love you zoya! And I want to spend the rest of my life with you!”

I couldn’t say anything, but then I thought of how happy it would make my parents, and putting a less heartfelt smile on my face I said yes I would marry him, on the condition he gives me Godiva chocolates everyday. I couldn’t and knew better not to expect any more from…he is a boy, he will cheat on me eventually.....

That afternoon when we drove back to college, I could tell I hadn’t seen him happier before. This relationship had been tiresome for both of us, but then I always had a feeling Id marry someone else, and that’s why I had always kept myself at an emotional distance from him, which, he took as a sign of my undying morality and religiousness. I knew he loved me, but how long before it all changes.

I could love him too, and at times I thought I did, but then at those times I would be meaner to him, and we would fight more often.

I wanted to be independent.

The car pulled into the parking lot, I was going to open the door but Imad already opened it for me, one thing he knew that wooed me.

We were going back to our lockers when my best friends came to me and started hugging me and congratulating us. I didn’t have to look at Imad to make him spill that the whole college probably knew he was going to propose to me today

I smiled at him, the only PDA Imad did get from me, and he lived for it.

“So what was it like?” Nimra being the most excited

“Uh, like a proposal,” I checked myself “actually very romantic, its like one moment you’re on the ground the other you’re flying high above!” the best cheesy line I could come up with.

“Aaah but I am so excited I’ve already decided what ill wear on your first dholki” screamed Laila.

“Me too! I can’t wait to have shaadi chicks all around me, god I am so hot” chimed in farhan

Sama interrupted all of them “My baby is getting married!!!! How can you think of yourselves hahaha”

We all kept laughing and soon the bell rang and we had to return to class

It seemed imad was right,

The whole college knew!
