A Journal to impart knowledge and facts
July 22, 2015

I'm going to start today to record on a daily basis whatever happens to strike my fancy. So, it is a very cool breezy day. I just posted 5 short book reviews to The Monthly Reading Challenge. I'm suppose to put away some winter wood today from the woodpile outside but I'm playing hookey from work to write so starting this blog will get done.

I'm having a daily fight with a flock of English Sparrows that are trying to take over my barn. They are making a terrible mess so they have to go. I have destroyed several nests so far they don't leave but they get out of the barn when I am around. I'm just starting the fight so I guess I don't know how far I have to go to discourage them.

I'm trying not to spread myself to thin on WDC because I find so many things that are interesting here and I am trying to work on a new story. I really enjoy sitting at my desk with a cup of tea and reading blogs on WDC.

This week is focused on National Days. *Ha* Starting with today, which is National Frappe Day ! Do you prefer your drinks hot or cold? What kind of blended drinks do you like?

Be who you are and say what you feel because; those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.--- Dr. Suess

Easy, cold drinks in hot weather and hot drinks in cold weather. I discovered Oat Straw green tea this spring. It is very refreshing iced and good hot. I do like to mix fruit in green tea.

I found Root Beer Tea at Stash a few years ago also very good cold. It has spices mixed in it. However, the U.S food and Drug Administration has banned sassafras roots which can be found in some root beer because it has carcinogens in it. Original root beer was made from sassafras and 16 roots and herbs.

I Have some Orange concentrate from the spice counter at Giant Eagle. Very good mixed in with other fruit juices or teas. I especially like icy drinks. Crushed ice with concentrated syrups. Yum. I used to stop at the library snack shop and buy tea with cherry concentrate when I was going to college. It was the perfect pick me up as I was studying. Later I discovered it also had a lot of calories.

Most of my drinks are plain water with ice or just room temperature water in winter. Not, spectacular but I like water. I'm not flamboyant with drinks. Not really special but cheap.

Write about a memorable encounter with a stranger.

Somewhere something incredible is waiting to be known-- by Carl Sagan

Hmm, O.K. Since we have one discussion of an encounter with a drunk this month I'll tell you this story. It is as accurate as I can presently remember.

It probably occurred sometime between 1967 and 1969. My first husband and I were the caretakers of a small horse stable on Randolph Air Force Base. The owners of the horses had all gone for the day the stable was officially considered closed by dark. We had guard chains that prohibited entry to the stalls and the base military police did a regular drive by on their rounds every night, about every couple hours.

One night some owners showed up after the horses and the stable had been put to bed. They had all been drinking and they had a friend with them who was out of his mind and into the depths of inebriation. He wanted to ride a horse after he realized where he was and was very loudly proclaiming all kinds of rather dangerous ideas. I took the owners aside and asked them to please control their guest. They did not know how to convince their acquaintance to leave.

So, I stepped up to this uncouth person and simply stated he would leave immediately because the stables were closed for the night. I told them they all had to leave because we had a curfew. When he argued I said I would not argue I would simply call the AP's if he did not leave right then. He looked to his friends who were startled but, suggested I might be right and they all left.

Lucky for me the AP patrol car came through and did their regular drive around the circle at the entry of the stable.

The next day the owner of the horses approached me and said they had never heard of a curfew at the stables. I had to admit we did not have one and they were free to ride at any time as long as they turned the lights out when they left but, I needed to stop a bad situation before it started. Horse back riding and extreme inebriation can be as dangerous as driving drunk.

They laughed and thanked me for stepping up. It's not pleasant to be on the end of threats from a person who is not in their common sense mind.

It was only a simple encounter. Never saw the man before or after so my only memory is of someone about 3 times my size. Hope he wasn't brass. *Laugh*
