SLAM!

The City

The City has a beat, sometimes even, often not;
the thrumming bass of jackhammers
rattles both pavement and teeth,
staccato bursts from a rumbling motorcycle
corralled momentarily by SUV's,
barely reined at the intersection,
demands release, until freed by the green light,
adding fresh effluvia in a burst of exhaust
to the wind stirred concrete dust.

Armani suit affixed to chattering headset
prattles nonstop to seal the deal,
bearing an aura of cologne and bourbon-scented power,
the smooth operator imagines himself
building and rending asunder with words;
as does the vagrant, chattering without a headset,
somnolent in his passage, oblivious even to himself.

Each pauses for a moment, compelled
by siren solo of the racing ambulance
to halt his conversation, observing the passage
of one who would no longer tread this pavement
in company of strangers, each singing solo
yet part of the chorus that gives the city its tone.

Sunlight refracted from glass walled towers
casts rainbows of primary colors,
to play across landmarks of centuries past
abutting newly built towers of concrete and mortar;
as the suit and the vagrant part ways at the corner
though solo their voices, each joins in the song
that gives the city its lyrical beat
that ebbs and flows with life.
