Dear Christopher. Never start a letter to a publisher or agent by 'To Whom it may concern,' since it shows the publisher you didn't go to the trouble of finding out who to address the letter to. Publishers want a short letter introducing yourself, a two page synopsis of the story. (You don't need to tell everything in the synopsis. Leave a carrot dangling to entice them to want to read more.) Also only send your first three chapters and if you want any feedback you sent a prepaid self addressed envelope with. You must get THE WRITERS HANDBOOK 2007 and search for a publisher who might be interested in the Genre you're writing in, and then address the person in the company who will handle your query. Start your synopsis with something like the following. 'This is the story of Patrick Keihl returning to Portland, Oregon, after living in England ...... One last thing. Check and re-check your letter for typos etc.
Good luck
Deks
