Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Layers
OK, I lied. I do know what you mean and I am attempting to do it in a rather sophisticated way in my current main project.

I'm rewriting an ancient legend from the point of view of an important but little described character. She is one female archetype: sexual, disobedient, irreligious, and bad. The main character from the original legend is another female archtype: compliant, brave, religious, and good. I'm telling a simple story on one level but I am also commenting on sexual politics and womens friendships on another .

In my meta story I want to merge the two female archetypes to make a whole woman. I do this on the literal level by surrealistically merging the two women physically, such that the spirit of the first resides beside the spirit of the second within the second's body. The way I accomplish this is to have the two predominantly heterosexual women make love. As the second climaxes, she merges into the first. From then on, the second, who has been telling the story, refers to herself as "we", occasionally commenting on whose spirit is directing the merged selves at the moment.

I attempt to prepare the reader for this rather shocking turn of events by earlier having the second woman become invisible ( or disappearing) just like she is dropped as a character early on in the original story. I hope it works.
