Thanks again for replying.

A few years ago, I had the problem that I had a lot of ideas, but didn't think any of them were good enough to write, or that I wouldn't write them well enough. Then I went to university and simply couldn't not write because I had deadlines (I studied english lit with creative writing), so that, and the boost that getting onto the course gave me, enabled me to get over the problem.

But now I've finished university, and have been keeping the writing going by entering competitions, but the other day, the old problem came back. I have loads of ideas, but it's like I don't have the confidence to write them.

I think part of the problem might be that I'm tryign to work to too many deadlines at once, and not giving myself enough time to let a story sink in before I start writing it. I've also discovered that I don't know what works for me, i.e., whether I find it easier to write if I've planned everything first, or whether I'm better off just writing it and seeing what happens. I don't have a system and I feel like I need one, because I feel like my writing's gone very hit and miss.

I've got a new idea, however, (not the monster one, it sort of came out of that, but is quite different) and am spending time just thinking about it, and getting to know the characters. I've decided I'm only going to start writing it when I feel ready to. I'm hoping it will turn out well as a consequence. If not, I think I'll have to do some self-scrutinising and try to work out why some things work and some things don't. Trouble is, I have no idea how I'm going to go about this!
